A Monthly Index for the Large‐Scale Sea Surface Temperature Gradient Across the Separated Gulf Stream

چکیده
Abstract The strong sea‐surface temperature (SST) gradient associated with the Gulf Stream (GS) is widely acknowledged to play an important role in shaping mid‐latitude weather and climate. Despite this, index for GS SST has not yet been standardized literature. This paper introduces a monthly large‐scale across separated based on time‐varying position detected from height. Analysis suggests that variations average throughout year result primarily variability north of GS, little contribution south. exhibits weak periodicity at ∼2 years. Sea level pressure turbulent heat flux patterns suggest related atmospheric (rather than oceanic) forcing. Ocean‐to‐atmosphere feedback does persist year, but there some evidence wintertime feedback.

Observed Strengthening of the Zonal Sea Surface Temperature Gradient across the Equatorial Pacific Ocean*
Decadal variations of very small amplitude [;0.38C in sea surface temperature (SST)] in the tropical Pacific Ocean, the genesis region of the interannual El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon, have been shown to have powerful impacts on global climate. Future projections from different climate models do not agree on how this critical feature will change under the influence of anthropog...
متن کاملCapabilities of data assimilation in correcting sea surface temperature in the Persian Gulf
Predicting the quality of water and air is a particular challenge for forecasting systems that support them. In order to represent the small-scale phenomena, a high-resolution model needs accurate capture of air and sea circulations, significant for forecasting environmental pollution. Data assimilation is one of the state of the art methods to be used for this purpose. Due to the importance of...

متن کاملHistorical Remotely Sensed Sea Surface Temperature Data for Prediction of Coral Bleaching Event in Kish Island, the Persian Gulf
The capability of Degree Heating Weeks index (DHWs) was examined for prediction of bleaching events in the coral reef communities of the Kish Island located in the north of the Persian Gulf. In doing so, weekly Sea Surface Temperature (SST) values (in 1°×1° spatial resolution) prepared by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), coupled with documented bleaching events, such...
متن کاملTrend of the Caspian Sea surface temperature changes
The interaction between sea and atmosphere has profound effects on the regions climate. Meanwhile, the sea surface temperature is considered as one of the most effective components of water bodies, and the controller of many atmospheric behaviors. Because of the importance of sea surface temperatures effects on atmospheric elements and also given the role of global warming on land and sea surfa...
